Though the spring season is a while off, receiving a holiday gift with a winter theme doesn’t seem all that appropriate with winter half over.  Here are a few fun gift ideas in preparation for spring.

~Bird Baths; great for attracting migrating birds to your yard, combined with a bird feeder and they just might build a nest.

~Garden Decor; stepping stones, statues, and fountains are all great ways to celebrate ways and add aesthetic flair to your yard.

~Kites; the spring is a great time for flying kites and getting outdoors.

Nestled deep in the woods of the Great Smokey Mountains lived three bears birds in a little Log Cabin Birdhouse.
One day a little girl came along and peeked into the opening. She saw three little open beaks, and the little hairless bird chicks were just quivering! Being quite startled, she jumped and ran away.

The moral of the story
Leave them alone, and mama will come home with treats for the quivery bird chicks!

Ok, I’m a tragic failure at story telling. But bird watching is great fun, and with birdbaths, and birdfeeders, and novelty birdhouses, you’ll have lots of bird company to enjoy!

I spotted this treasure among a few spectacular hand made decorative birdhouses while browsing around the internet.ship-shape.jpg

Ah! That the website belonged to a dear friend of mine…
Even without the birds, this thing is a real eye catcher.  Outdoor garden decor extraordinaire!

But very simple lawn and garden decor and decorative birdhouses can also be very attractive in the midst of your own private garden sanctuary. I love to see decorative birdhouses and novelty birdhouses accentuated by clematis vines or simple ivy.

If you’re one of those birdhouse crafters, say “howdy!”  I’d love to see your handiwork!

So you’ve built yourself a little birdhouse, and you’re feeling all proud. As well you should!
Now you’re wanting to show it off a little?
Then maybe it’s time to get bold and artistic.
All you need is a thin pine board and some paint.

Since your new birdhouse will probably hang unoccupied for a few weeks, this is an excellent opportunity to transform your birdhouse into unique garden decor. (No matter what develops, there will not be another one like it. Anywhere!)

Draw or trace a design on graph paper, or directly onto the wood. Cut it out and paint it!
Now your only limitation is your own imagination! You can cut out stars, moons, clowns, balloons, faces, trees, or… well… anything!!

There you have it. Unique birdhouses are fun, and, well, unique!

Building a birdhouse is a wonderful project for adults to share with children. It can be an opportunity to learn about birds, as well as the proper use of woodworking tools.
You may want to construct a decorative birdhouse or you may want to construct a simple functional birdhouse for the express purpose of attracting birds into your yard.

Building decorative birdhouses are fun projects and make great home, or lawn and garden decor. They may also be functional and used for nesting. But in reality birds often prefer plain, weathered and unpainted houses. These can be great fun, too, as well as less complicated for the most part.

The decorative birdhouses can be accentuated with the help of surrounding garden design.  A log cabin birdhouse will look great in a woodsy area. Using rocks to give the area the look of a mountainside will really make your log cabin birdhouse feel right at home.

If you’ve incorporated a sandy area for your birds, a lighthouse birdhouse will fit in perfectly there. A birdbath, also, is an ideal location for that lighthouse birdhouse. It’ll give your birdies a feeling of security while splashing around in their favorite birdbath!

Happy splashing, birdies!!

old-mill-birdhouses205668680.jpgDecorative birdhouses can be used for beautifying any space, indoors or out. Most birdhouses do not require a large area and can be effectively placed right in a terrace garden or patio. There are many many different types of birdhouses available on the market, from wooden birdhouses constructed of teeny tiny lumber, to huge hotel type birdhouses to accommodate purple martins.

Enjoy nature in your home with the help of decorative birdhouses.

Garden decor birdhouses are available a wide price range, so one has a generous selection of decorative birdhouses to fit your garden decor taste and your budget. The decorative birdhouses are the perfect choice for adding charm to your own backyard or garden, and offers a great variety of gift ideas for your loved ones.

Decorative birdhouses serve the same purpose as any other type of  birdhouses, but are unique in their character and style.

Imagine a splendid mansion: and you are sure to visualize a front lawn and garden complete with birdhouses, birdbaths and a fountain; and of course many elegant birds chirping and flying around!

Whether you live in a splendid mansion or a little house, or even a garden apartment, decorative birdhouses are the perfect kind of accessory for your garden or lawn or deck. Think of your favorite places and things, and you can find decorative birdhouses to show them off! Dream of the ocean with a lighthouse birdhouse, or just imagine kicking back in your little dream cabin in the mountains with a log cabin birdhouse.

All the while, you will enjoy being right where you are watching your newfound splendidly colored feathered friends!

house-wren.jpgThis plump little bird has no spectacular features, though he is very cute. He’s about 5 inches long with a short tail. His head and body are grayish brown and his underparts are grayish white. He has no streaks or prominent field markings.

The endearing feature of this bird is his feeding habit. The House Wren’s diet consist almost entirely of insects. Relentlessly searching for insects during the nesting phase, House Wrens can be a boon to your garden! (Eco-friendly pest control, so to speak.)

Attracting the House Wren can be as easy as adding a wren birdhouse specifically built for them. Also they can be watched fairly closely. They seem to be fairly tolerant of people. The wren will let you know if you are getting too close to the nest, though. She will give you a good scolding!

34718.jpgIt’s the season again for the birds start migrating back from the south. So now it’s time to start preparing your yard for their arrival. ☺

With Bird Baths, Bird Feeders, and Bird Houses

The best birdbaths are about 3″ deep (or less) and on a pedestal , with a rough bottom so the birds can stand and walk around in it. Make sure it’s away from places for cats to hide. And keep it supplied with fresh water, either by having a source of running water, or changing the water daily.

Putting out a bird feeder will really attract the birds, especially if you fill it with black oil sunflower seeds! It should be covered to protect it from rain, with ample perch space.

And, of course, a birdhouse or two will be attractive by themselves as well as providing a place for your feathery friends to lodge. Some recommendations include: hole size 1/4″ larger than bird, good ventilation, and a roof with an overhang to protect from rain and cats.

These things will make our feathery friends happy and give you much pleasure in the sunny months ahead, as well as providing a good source of entertainment for your house cats to watch through the windows!

Have a great spring and summer, and enjoy your back yard!
